An old song has been on my mind this morning. “Lets’ Live for Today” was released in the U.S. on May 13, 1967 by The Grass Roots. It reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and became the title track for the group’s second album. It’s a love song, so I guess I’m taking it out of context, but the first verse is:

“When I think of all the worries
People seem to find
And how they’re in a hurry
To complicate their minds

By chasing after money
And dreams that can’t come true
I’m glad that we are different
We’ve better things to do”

It reminds me of all of the distractions we allow into our minds that detract from the opportunities and happiness that are to be found in the present day. Much of what gets us down is either thinking about the past or worrying about the future; we can do nothing about either of those. Jesus had much to say about this, especially in Matt 6: 25-34; his summary in verse 34 says, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” And that reminds me of the lyrics of another song: “Many things about tomorrow I don’t seem to understand, but I know Who holds tomorrow and I know Who holds my hand.”

Live for Today Holding His Hand.
